First Birthday Themes: ONE Puns, Seasons and Colors
October 7, 2026
The best first birthday themes either pun on “one” or follow the season your baby was born in. Winter babies get ONEderland or a little snowflake. Spring babies get Sweet as Can Bee or Hole in One. Summer babies get Berry First, One in a Melon or a sunny First Trip Around the Sun. Fall babies get Little Pumpkin or One Happy Camper. Wild One works any month. Or skip the pun and choose one soft color palette. Below are our favorites sorted by birth season, each with a palette and a smash cake idea, plus links to the full plans for the ones we love most.
How to pick (in two minutes)
Your one-year-old has no opinion, so this one’s all yours. Three quick questions settle it:
- When’s the birthday? A seasonal theme means the decor is already in the shops, and often already in your yard.
- Indoors or outdoors? A camping or garden theme wants a backyard. ONEderland and a color palette work in a living room.
- Pun or no pun? Puns are fun on the invitation and the cake. If you’d rather keep it simple, a single palette looks just as lovely in photos.
Winter babies (December to February)
ONEderland. Icy blue, silver and white, with paper snowflakes, a white smash cake and “welcome to ONEderland” on the sign. The classic winter first birthday, and it works for any baby.
Our little snowflake. A softer, smaller version of ONEderland: white and pale gray, a single snowflake garland and hot cocoa for the grown-ups.
Little cutie turns one. Orange and green, with a bowl of clementines on every table. Clementines are at their best in winter, so the fruit is the decor and the snack. A small orange-zest smash cake finishes it.
Baby it’s cold outside. Cozy knits, mittens on a garland, a cocoa bar and marshmallow towers. Good for a party indoors on a gray day.
Spring babies (March to May)
Sweet as can bee. Honey yellow, cream and black, with a honeycomb backdrop and honey cakes. A small honey-and-lemon smash cake is perfect.
Hole in One. For a golf-loving family: a green carpet “putting green,” tiny flags, and a golf-ball smash cake.
Some bunny is one. A spring classic around Easter: pastel colors, bunny ears for the guests and carrot cake for the adults.
Blooming one. Blush, sage and cream with jars of spring flowers. Simple, pretty, and great for a garden party.
Summer babies (June to August)
Berry First. Strawberries everywhere: red and pink, a strawberry smash cake, berries on every plate. Strawberries are in season, so the whole table looks fresh for very little.
One in a Melon. Watermelon pink and green, with slices on the table and a watermelon-shaped cake. The sweetest backyard party.
First Trip Around the Sun. Sunshine yellow and orange, or a cosmic navy and gold, with suns and planets. Our First Trip Around the Sun party plan has both palettes, the food and the nap-friendly timing.
Under the sea (or the ONE-der sea). Sea glass green and sand, with shells and a blue smash cake. Perfect for a beach or a splash pad party.
Fall babies (September to November)
Little Pumpkin. Orange, cream and sage, with real pumpkins as the decor and a pumpkin smash cake. Our Little Pumpkin first birthday guide shows how a crate of pumpkins does most of the work.
One Happy Camper. Plaid, a small tent in the corner, a s’mores bar for the adults and a campfire-colored cake. Great for an outdoor party in the early fall.
Our little acorn. Brown, mustard and moss green, with acorns, pine cones and a woodland cake. A gentle, earthy pick for an October baby.
Fall-ing for ONE. Rust, gold and cream, with leaf garlands and apple cider. Easy to put together with what’s already in the shops.
Any time of year
Wild One. The most popular ONE theme of all: a boho palette, greenery and animal touches, and a wild-one smash cake. Everything you need is in our Wild One first birthday plan.
Sweet One. Pastel colors and a donut wall or a donut tower. Mini donuts for guests, one big donut for the smash.
Mr. Onederful. Little bow ties, suspenders and a navy-and-white palette. A sweet, dapper theme with a “Mr. ONEderful” sign.
Rookie of the Year. A sports theme for a family that loves the game: jerseys, a scoreboard and a ball-shaped cake.
Fiesta for one. Bright colors, paper flowers and a taco bar for the adults. Very cheerful and easy to cater.
Color palettes (no theme required)
If puns aren’t your thing, choose one color and use it everywhere: balloons, napkins, flowers and the cake. Soft colors photograph best for a first birthday:
- Blush and cream for a soft, classic look
- Sage and white for a fresh, modern one
- Pale blue and gold for winter or a beach
- Butter yellow and white for spring or summer
Our color party ideas show how to build a whole party around one color, from the food to the dress code.
Making any theme work for a one-year-old
- Plan around the nap. Pick a party time after the morning nap or the afternoon nap, not across it.
- Keep the decor out of reach. Small decorations and balloons are best kept high, away from little hands and mouths.
- One focal point is enough. A balloon arch, a backdrop or a cake table. The rest can be plain.
- The smash cake is the theme’s moment. Choose its colors and one topper to match. That’s the photo everyone will keep.
- Put the pun on the invitation. Our first birthday invitation wording has ONE puns sorted by theme, so you don’t have to come up with them.
FAQ
What are popular first birthday themes?
Wild One, ONEderland, Sweet One, Little Pumpkin, Berry First, One in a Melon and First Trip Around the Sun are some of the most popular. Many families also choose a simple color palette with no theme.
How do I choose a first birthday theme?
Start with the season your baby was born in, then decide whether you want a pun or just a color palette. A seasonal theme is often the cheapest, because the decorations are easy to find.
What’s a good first birthday theme for a winter baby?
ONEderland is the classic winter theme, with snowflakes and icy blue. Little cutie (clementines) and a cozy hot cocoa party are lovely alternatives.
Does a first birthday need a theme?
No. A single color palette and a smash cake are enough for a beautiful first birthday. A theme just makes it easier to decide what to buy.
Pick the season, pick the pun (or don’t) and let the smash cake be the star. Happy first birthday to your little one, friend!
