This month has been all about decluttering

kids room

It feels like it has been so long since I have come here to write about us, and our home. I think the last post I did was on our kitchen extension which we have decided to hold off and continue to upgrade the other rooms of the house beforehand. The kitchen was in major need of a new floor, we bought and laid new flooring last weekend and the difference to the room is amazing. We need to patch up the wall now where the boiler is and we want to move the kitchen around slightly ready for when we do start the extension.

We have also been working on our summer house and painting the outside. It has taken us longer then expected. I have been more consumed with tending my garden and stripping it bare of weeds and overgrowth. It has been the most fun I have had in ages. I wish I had a before picture because its looks so much better. It is not exactly how I would like it just yet but I am still so happy with where it is right now, because it looks neat and tidy and the grass looks so much better.

This weekend my husband worked on a little project he has been wanting to do for ages, which was fitting some floating pine shelves in our lounge. He did these himself from some old pine, he had to shave them down and coat each with clear varnish to enhance the colour. I think they look lovely and really compliment our fireplace.

Slowly but surely the house is coming along, although it takes lots of time and effort it is lovely seeing the results. We have so much more to do, I am sure we will get there in time.

I think summer really is a time for decluttering, renovating and decorating. It is so therapeutic, I love nothing more than sorting and decluttering my house. We have some big plans for this weekend for our ‘out house’ (the small hall leading from front to back garden and to kitchen) currently used as an everything room and it is just so cluttered and messy I cant wait to get my hands on it.

I also recently decluttered the children’s room,I stripped it of all their toys. Seven black bags full of toys went into the attic including the three big toy pushchairs. It was so refreshing and such a nice feeling to have it all put away. It was getting to the point where I couldn’t keep on top of all the mess because they would take toys from one room to the next, and the house was left in a complete mess and I felt overwhelmed and out of control with it all.

So I took them all away, partly to teach Sophia that she needs to at least help a little to clean up after herself at nearly 5 years old, and also because I just felt they had too many toys, that actually it was becoming overwhelming for them. Instead of playing they were just making an uncontrollable mess.

It also had a lot to do with my feelings of over cluttering and over consumption. I think we live in a society where we can buy whatever we like and we end up making our homes so cluttered we have no clear space to think and relax. It all just got on top of me.

This weekend just gone, I took all the seven bag full of toys out from the attic. One bag was given to their granny for her house, two bags were taken to our local second hand toy shop along with a pushchair, which actually I am planning on doing tomorrow. And four bags sorted and put neatly into their room.

I am hoping this all pays off and both of them, more so Sophia, help me clean up and look after their toys more rather than having so much they take it all for granted. They are lucky they have so much and I want them to know that.

I plan on sorting some more, but for now I am pleased that we have got to a place where I feel in control of the mess. Most importantly I see a huge difference in my children. Sophia was over the moon when I brought her toys down from the attic she was jumping for joy and hugging her precious dolls, it was lovely to see such appreciation and a grateful attitude in her.

It made me feel good that she was happy and I was happy because the whole experience taught us all that what we really need is a good book, lots of cuddles, a warm house, and each other. Thats all.

What have you been doing this Summer to declutter and decorate your home?

I feel a bit suffocated by all of the stuff in our house at the moment. I feel like we have way, way too much stuff. I’m slowly working my way through our house and trying to be as ruthless as possible (which is hard because I’m sentimental).

Hopefully at the end of it all I will have a clearer house and a clearer mind. x

Yes I know the feeling it is always a case of keeping it for sentimental reasons or not. One thing that always helps me is thinking whether or not it is vital for our family or not. Good luck with your decluttering Jenna x

I’m with you on the decluttering. A friend of mine introduced me to the KonMari tidying book last week, and the decluttering started this weekend. Already I feel that the whole house is lighter, even though we still have so much to do.

Great article…I sometimes feel like I am on a constant cycle of consuming and de-cluttering.

I think decluttering and taking toys away is such a good idea. They can be so overwhelming!

Your place looks so lovely and those wooden shelves are beautiful!

We regular take away lots of Evie’s toys and rotate them daily. She always gets excited with what new/old toys she’s going to play with today. xx #twinklytuesday

Looks like you’ve been very busy. Completely agree with your thoughts on clutter and over consumption. We badly need to sort our kids’ stuff out, as our little house often feels overwhelmed. I’m also making an effort to not spend money on things they just don’t need – though my mum is the worst for this! Hoping to do a car boot sale soon and raise a bit of pocket money for our holiday. #TwinklyTuesday

I love those wooden shelves!! They look stunning.
I am in the middle of decluttering my bedroom and kitchen. We need to buy a few shelves for each room I think and we will be so much better for storage x

I really need to do this too. The kids have far to many toys and all they do is empty them out onto the floor. They rarely play with a toy properly. I’m hoping I will get a chance to go through things when Charlie & Noah are in school in September. I certainly need to do it before Christmas! Your shelves look lovely! Well done to your husband! Chris and I have been slacking the last few weeks… xxx

We are usually slacking! So don’t worry! Slow and steady always wins the race, I try to remind myself of this when it comes to decorating our home sometimes I just want to rush ahead with it all. But in reality it all takes time. I do love a good declutter! xx

Eurgh. Clutter. Literally the bane of my life at the moment!!! There is stuff EVERYWHERE!!

I need a day — totally by myself with no interruptions — no babies, no work, no blog, to have a good blitz on the house and put lots of stuff on Ebay!! I HATE EBaying stuff — it takes so much time — but I always feel like a weight has been lifted after I’ve done it!! Thanks so much for linking up with #TwinklyTuesday — hope to see you again next week! x

PS — I co-host a homes and garden inspired linky every Wednesday called #HomeEtc. This kind of post would be perfect if you’d like to link up with us 🙂

I am trying to de-clutter at the moment, I have been going through toys trying to sell some bits that we no longer need, some of the things I have got rid of would be ideal for Arthur in another year or so, but I decided that I can’t keep everything I will be buying him presents for birthdays and Christmas’s and if we keep everything our house will soon look like Hamley’s! x

It seems like everyone is decluttering right now. It’s always such a relief for me to purge all the unnecessary things from our house!
