Our challenge

Our family have been challenged by Sky Broadband and their new Buddy App, which launched in May, to cut down our screen time and adopt healthier habits as a family. I don’t know about you, but having three young children who are growing up in a world where technology is part of our everyday lives, it is important to me that they learn good habits. I want them to know it’s important we spend our time online wisely no matter what age we are.

Peace of mind

The Sky Broadband Buddy App gives Daniel and I peace of mind for our family. With Buddy’s market leading features and controls we are able to pause our internet, filter and select screen time on each individual device in our home.

Key Features

Pause the internet

Have control over screen times

Create different filters for everyone in the family

Screen time rewards

Works outside the home

This is what the home screen looks like, and these are the four profiles I have created for each of us. You can pause the whole house with just one click of a button.

Managing screen times with the Sky Broadband Buddy App

As we are now in the summer holidays it is slightly easier to manage screen times, as we are doing a lot more activities out of the house without the children’s tablets. I’m also not on my phone as much either. However come the evening times, when it’s time to wind down from the day the children do often turn to television or they’re tablets. Sometimes not wanting to come to the dinner table so they can carry on watching their programme.

So this is where Buddy has come in so useful for us as we can either put a time limit on all their devices or we can just pause the internet. We can do this routinely every day so that the children get used to the time which they can be online and when they can’t. It makes it a lot easier to have this routine in place for us.

I definitely think as much as the online world can have such a positive impact in many ways it also can be negative if we spend too much time on it. I am lucky that Sophia and Archie are still quite young and can enjoy the benefits of being online in moderation. They love playing outdoors and with the help of Buddy for the last week we have had no screen time until the evenings. It’s helped us as a family to maintain a healthy balance in our children’s lives by keeping their devices and screen time in moderation.

As it is the summer holidays we do allow the children a little later bedtime, it’s one of the things they look forward to the most in the holidays. So with the help of the Sky Broadband Buddy App and during our summer holiday week, we have been able to set a bedtime on all the devices that the children use. At a certain time in the evenings all devices go off and they can settle down before going to bed and reading a book.

I really love this feature as it is so easy to give in and to let them watch for a little longer to keep them happy for bedtime. But if it’s a routine and set up with Sky Buddy it makes the bedtime transition a lot easier.

One of the features I like the most I like the most is that you can set filters to each individual device, it’s only my older two Sophia and Archie who use their tablets and the television. But they are both at different ages so it’s important they are only able to see age appropriate things online. Buddy allows you to filter each device individually.

This is Archie’s individual profile where I can control his screen time for the day, his bedtime and any screen time rewards he gets.

The reward screen, you can either give a bedtime reward or disable off-times for the day

Another great feature of the Buddy app is the ability to use screen time rewards. If they have cleaned their bedroom or helped with the washing up or hoovering you can use a screen time reward to encourage them. You can give them more time for their favourite apps, games or television programmes.

When we are out for the evening after school or during the summer holidays and we have their tablets with us, it doesn’t mean our routines at home need to change at all because Sky Broadband Buddy features work outside the home too, across 3G and 4G as well as WiFi.

Overall how have we found our week with the Buddy app

I have personally really enjoyed using the Sky Broadband Buddy app in our home for the week. And without question will keep using it. It allows us to stick to our routines that we have put in place using Buddy, it allows us to teach our children the importance of healthy habits on the internet.

Sophia and Archie have had the odd evening when they have asked for more time but on the whole its gone really well and I am so happy that we took up this challenge. Because it really made me think consciously about our time and their time online and how important it is to keep a tab on it.

Thank you so much to Sky for introducing us to the Sky Broadband Buddy App and helping us implement a healthier lifestyle with our devices at home.

That sounds like an awesome app. I love how easy it is to control screen time with it. That can be a bit of a struggle in our house.

I love how it has control over screen time and that is the most important to our family. Kids these days are so addicted to the gadget and forgot totally or ignoring when we ask them to stop. This is truly useful.
