How to clear glue ear in children

glue ear

I have been meaning to write this post for some time now and my main reason behind it is to give parents another option when dealing with a child who has recurrent ear infections, earache or who has been diagnosed with glue ear.

From my own experience I know it is completely possible to clear glue ear in children without having to have a procedure or take antibiotics.

If you have a child that suffers terribly from earache, or has been diagnosed with glue ear you will most definitely understand the suffering both you and your child go through.

For us it was a mixture of not knowing what other options there were and extreme sleepless nights. When my son was 9 months old he would wake and cry inconsolably all night. We would cuddle him, I would breastfeed, we would take turns to rock him and nothing would work.

When we finally took him the doctors and advised of his symptoms, the doctor diagnosed him with an ear infection. I remember I felt so terrible as it had been going on for a couple of weeks and I had been non the wiser, he never had a temperature or anything the first time around.

He was put on a course of antibiotics and he started sleeping through the night and we all had some much needed sleep. Unfortunately not even 3 weeks later he again started waking constantly in the night. I took him back to the doctor and again he had a bad ear infection.

Overall from September- December he had four diagnosed ear infections and a few temperatures. I don’t remember him sleeping through or even well over this time and it had a effect on the whole family as we were all not sleeping well because of his recurrent ear infections.

ear infections

Finally in January we were sent to the hospital to have his ears tested with a machine that would check the pressure in his ear. He was then diagnosed with glue ear and we were sent to a specialist who prescribed him a another course of antibiotics. We were advised if this didn’t work he would have a procedure to drain his ears. He was only just 12 months old and it was my worst nightmare.

I was on a mission to help him clear his glue ear so that he would not have to have an operation.

That is when I turned to homeopathy. I had taken it many times as a yong child growing up but had not been in a situation with my children when I needed to use it. I also know about herbal treatments too, and I know they work very well, but felt it would be easier for such small child my sons age to take the homeopathy medicines as opposed to the herbal ones.

We saw a lovely homeopath in our area who sat with us for over an hour and discussed my sons first year of life from his traumatic birth to his wellbeing as a baby and so on. She gave him some medicine lasting 5 or so days and that was it.

Over the course of two months until March he had a few more treatments from the homeopath. We went back to the hospital in May for a hearing test to find that his glue ear had completely cleared up.

I had a feeling it had cleared as he was sleeping through the night, but I wasn’t completely sure.

When I found out I was so happy, for me it was a complete miracle as we had battled with this for many months, (what felt like a lifetime) and to have it confirmed that it had completely cleared up was the best news to hear.

My son has never had an ear infection again and he is now 2 years old and 3 months.

We saw Sarah at Helios if you are wondering. But I have complete faith that any qualified homeopath will be able to clear this up for a child suffering with glue ear.

Still now I am so grateful we avoided my 1 year old going into surgery and using alternative medicines. I am not saying it will work for everyone but it completely worked for us over a 2 month period. It was not only one course of homeopathic treatments, but a number of them. Maybe 3-4 if I remember correctly. But over the two months if he woke in the night or showed any signs of earache or illness I called my homeopath right away and we discussed treatments.

I will be forever grateful for just how wonderfully healthy my little boy is now. For the sheer fact that he was saved from having to have an invasive procedure that I would rather him not endure at such a young age.

Looking back now it feels like a lifetime ago. But at the time it was one of the hardest times we had been through as a family. To see your child suffer in pain and see that the antibiotics are not working is hard to go through.

Here are a couple of things we tried to help him with his earache and infections naturally at home:

1.Rubbing lavender oil behind his ears, I bought this from a herbalist shop, but Neal’s Yard may sell this too.

2.We sellotaped garlic cloves under his feet and then put socks over when he slept. You can also put behind the ears which works better but it depends if your child will let you.

3. Camomile tea (herbal tea)

4. Camomilla for the pain (homeopath medicine)

I hope to have offered you hope that there are alternative ways to treat glue ear, and many other conditions for that matter.

I wish you all the luck in the world if you are dealing with something similar and hope that you come to some sort of medical arrangement that works for you as a family. All the best.

We have only had one ear infection so far, one of my twins had one and was so upset and in pain with it. It was a Saturday so we ended up going to the out of hours doctor for antibiotics. Thank you for posting these alternative solutions – I actually didn’t know about any of these so will be armed with extra knowledge if there is a next time.

It must be horrible for them to have glue ear so young, then not being able to communicate what’s wrong! Abbie gets pretty waxy ears and she hates it, think she gets it from me, I didn’t even know it was a condition! x

I thought my little one gad this before as she seemed to not hear us as well as normal but it was just a wax build up. Ears are such an important part of us that we really do take for granted. X
